Island life really shines “Up North,” as the locals call it. Lobster season is fast-approaching in Belize. Lobster will officially be in season on 15 June. To gear up for the opening of the season and San Pedro’s very own Lobster Fest, here’s a bit about the rich history of our favorite island. The Caribbean Spiny Lobster industry has a fascinating past and a direct link to the transformation of Ambergris Caye from a sleepy fishing village to the tourist destination it is today. We met up with Mr. Mito Paz, the coordinator for NICH (National Institute of Culture and History) and the San Pedro House of Culture to explain more.

On Ambergris Caye, the month of June is all about the Caribbean Spiny Lobster. After four long months of foregoing the tasty and indulgent lobster, the season officially opens in the second week of June. We will be celebrating along with the rest of the island, during the annual San Pedro Lobster Fest where lobster in all of its delicious preparations will be available for tasting. It is English speaking, very friendly local people and with main hubs throughout North America, travel time is about half a day, depending on your starting location.

We are in the midst of Spring Break and summer is just around the corner, no matter what your current wintry mix forecast is saying. With any luck, you’ll be on a beach with the whole family sooner rather than later. Travel with kids can at times be a mixed bag, but certainly not something to shy away from.

A visit to Belize is not complete without exploring the Belize Barrier Reef, the largest reef in this hemisphere. Belize, though small in size, has made great strides in protecting the natural wonders found here. The efforts, which range from designated and enforced protected areas, conservation awareness, and community-wide cleanups, help to keep Belize the paradise that it is. Though far from perfect, the building blocks are there and with many households dependent on jobs in tourism or conservation, Belizeans, on the whole, recognize the importance of protecting their beloved “hidden jewel” of Belize.

Belize’s Great Blue Hole attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is often found on Top 10 Dive lists, bucket lists, etc. due to its stunning formations and features.
