5 Best Activities for Outdoorsy Families

As a mom of three wildlings (who never seem to slow down) ranging from tween to tot, I know
parents want a vacation that will keep the whole family entertained, provide unique experiences, connect you with nature, and still provide plenty of time for relaxing. And finding that perfect destination can be hard.
Look no further! Our family recently spent a week at Coco Beach Resort and had the most
amazing time exploring Belize. From snorkeling in the world’s second-largest barrier reef to
tubing through a limestone cave, Belize has nature-based adventure around every corner.
We had the opportunity to try out a wide variety of activities during our stay, which were great
for all the kids (and the parents). Here are my top 5 recommendations for the best outdoor
activities for families, with a few suggestions for ways to modify the activity based on the age(s)
of your kids.

Snorkeling

The Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world, is a snorkeling and diving
paradise. Families can explore the vibrant underwater world teeming with colorful fish, corals,
and other marine life. We saw turtles, eels, sharks, rays, barracuda, lobster, and so many colorful fish. It felt like swimming through an aquarium!

Modifications for Different Ages and Abilities:

• Young Kids: Opt for shallow, calm waters such as those around Hol Chan Marine
  Reserve, a protected 3-mile area located just a few miles off the southeast coast of
  Ambergris Caye. Hire a guide service (we loved Amigos del Mar), and your guide will
  help little ones by using floatation devices and providing instruction on snorkeling basics.
• Older Kids and Teens: Explore more advanced spots like Shark Ray Alley, where they
  can swim alongside gentle nurse sharks and rays.
  Exploring Caye Caulker
  Caye Caulker, a small island off the coast of Belize, is known for its laid-back vibe and natural beauty. The island is small and easy to spend a day exploring, with a variety of activities that are perfect for families.

Modifications for Different Ages and Abilities:

• Young Kids: The Split, a shallow and calm area perfect for swimming, is ideal for young
  children. The island’s sandy streets are also great for leisurely strolls with little ones.
• Older Kids and Teens: Right off the coast of Caye Caulker, you can feed the tarpon!
  There’s nothing quite like waving a sardine over the side of the boat (or dock) while giant
  tarpon swim below, ready to leap into the air and grab the sardine from your extended
  arm! Head over to Stingray Beach, where you can spot seahorses in a protected area, and
  pet stingrays! These gentle giants love rubbing up against your legs and feet as you stand
  in the water with them!

Cave Tubing

Belize’s river systems and limestone caves offer thrilling adventures like cave tubing and river
kayaking. These activities combine excitement with a unique way to explore the natural
landscape.

Modifications for Different Ages and Abilities:

• Young Kids: Choose shorter and more accessible tubing routes, ensuring that life jackets
  and safety gear are properly fitted.
• Older Kids and Teens: Opt for longer, more adventurous routes that involve hiking and
  navigating through multiple caves. Older kids will also enjoy the relaxing float through
  stunning cave systems while learning about the geological formations and Mayan history.

Fishing

Fishing in Belize offers a fantastic opportunity for families to bond over a shared activity while
enjoying time on the water and taking in the stunning natural surroundings. Whether it’s deep-sea fishing, fly fishing, or reef fishing, there’s something for everyone.

Modifications for Different Ages and Abilities:

• Young Kids: Choose calm and sheltered spots for reef fishing, where they can catch
  smaller, more abundant fish. Charter boats and guides often provide equipment and
  guidance suitable for younger children.
• Older Kids and Teens: Engage them in more challenging types of fishing, like fly
  fishing in the flats for bonefish and tarpon, or deep-sea fishing for larger species like
  marlin and sailfish. Many charters will even help you clean your catch, so you can have it
  for dinner!

Exploring the Mayan Ruins

Belize’s ancient Mayan ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into history and provide an educational
adventure for the whole family. Sites like Xunantunich, Caracol, and Altun Ha are perfect for
exploration.

Modifications for Different Ages and Abilities:

• Young Kids: Choose ruins with easier access and shorter walking distances, like Altun
  Ha. Bring along snacks and water to keep energy levels up.
• Older Kids and Teens: Engage them with the history and stories behind the ruins.
  Xunantunich, with its impressive El Castillo pyramid, is a great choice. Enjoy a guided
  tour that provide in-depth historical context and fascinating insights.
